Here’s a fun exercise: picture yourself at age 13. What adjectives come to mind? I’ll share mine: metal-mouthed, sweaty, uncomfortable, unsure. At the same age, Alysa Liu is all the antonyms. Her smile glows, and she’s graceful, elegant and sure-footed. So graceful, elegant and sure-footed that she landed two triple axels during her free skate at the 2019 U.S. Figure Skating Championships — becoming the first American woman to land two. She also landed a triple axel in her short program, making her one of four Americans to land it in a competition. All of this landed her a spot at the top of the podium, making her the youngest skater ever to win the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.
Her performance is astounding:
My mother always told me “you don’t want to peak in middle school”, but I think Alysa Liu will be alright.
