Just days after a nail-biting end to the NCAA basketball tournament, the excitement continues for women’s basketball fans. The WNBA draft is tomorrow (April 10th) at Nike’s New York Headquarters, and televised on ESPN2 (second and third rounds televised on ESPNU).
From the Notre Dame and UConn stars you’ve watched in a few epic March Madness battles to an international pick and Ivy League pick, here is who you should look out for. Today the WNBA released a list of the 12 players who are invited to attend the draft:
- Kristine Anigwe, California
- Kalani Brown, Baylor
- Napheesa Collier, UConn
- Sophie Cunningham, Missouri
- Asia Durr, Louisville
- Megan Gustafson, Iowa
- Teaira McCowan, Mississippi State
- Arike Ogunbowale, Notre Dame
- Katie Lou Samuelson, UConn
- Alanna Smith, Stanford
- Han Xu, China
- Jackie Young, Notre Dame
This year’s draft could go a number of ways because of the depth of talent across positions and the fact that there isn’t a clear number one pick. SB Nation’s mock draft chooses guard Asia Durr as number one pick for the Las Vegas Aces, while Swish Appeal opts for Jackie Young as the top pick.
Either way, the deck is stacked this year – with players like Megan Gustafson, power center and 2019 Naismith Player of the Year, Arike Ogunbowale, “Final Four legend” who we saw score two game winning shots within 48 hours last March, and Katie Lou Samuelson the draft’s most deadly three-point shooter, to name a few.
